Your HELOC question

Can I use a HELOC to consolidate debt?

Compare the total cost and the new risk to your home.

The short answer

A HELOC can be used to pay other debts under applicable lender terms, but that changes the security for the debt. Credit-card balances moved onto a HELOC become borrowing backed by your home. A smaller monthly payment may reflect a longer repayment period rather than lower overall cost. Include fees, future rate changes and a plan to avoid rebuilding card balances.

What matters in this situation

  • Balances, rates and remaining repayment periods on the existing debts.
  • The proposed HELOC payment, fees and repayment period under the same comparison horizon.
  • Whether the household budget works without adding new card balances.

What to gather

  • Current debt statements and a realistic monthly budget.
  • Written HELOC pricing and fee terms before making a decision.

A worked example

At an illustrative 9% annual rate, a $30,000 balance costs about $225 a month in interest alone before fees. Paying only that interest does not reduce the $30,000 principal.

Illustrative only. The numbers do not represent a loan offer.

What could change the answer

  • Failure to repay home-secured borrowing can risk foreclosure.
  • New card spending can leave both the HELOC and fresh unsecured debt to repay.

Other routes to consider

  • Ask current creditors about lower-cost payment arrangements.
  • Compare nonprofit credit counseling, a structured repayment plan or an unsecured consolidation loan.
