Your HELOC question
Can I get a HELOC on a condo?
The building and association can matter alongside your own finances.
Condos are eligible under some HELOC products, but property conditions are lender-specific. PenFed, for example, publishes a separate condominium combined-loan-to-value limit, and Bank of America asks for association information during review. A strong personal application does not answer every question about the unit, insurance or association.
Check my situationWhat matters in this situation
- Whether the lender accepts your condominium and occupancy type.
- Insurance, association information and any property-review requirements.
- Dues and assessments when considering the total housing payment.
What to gather
- Current mortgage, homeowners insurance and association contact details.
- Dues and assessment information; further association documents if requested.
A worked example
If your housing budget includes a $2,100 mortgage and $450 in association dues, test the added HELOC payment against both costs, plus insurance, taxes and any assessment—not just the mortgage payment.
Illustrative only. The numbers do not represent a loan offer. What could change the answer
- A property review can raise questions even when the homeowner’s credit is strong.
- Using a generic house estimate may omit association costs or property-specific limits.
Other routes to consider
- Ask the lender to check condominium eligibility early.
- Compare borrowing a smaller amount or funding the project in stages.
